The Dawn of Hope Foundation recently completed the sixth and final home in the Unicoi County Houses for Hope project, which began in 2009. The new homes feature three bedrooms, two full baths and a double garage. The homes are also equipped with wide doorways and ramps to accommodate wheelchairs. Funding for the construction of these homes was made possible through a grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Authority, Bank of Tennessee and the Dawn of Hope Foundation. Technical and grant assistance was provided by Eastern 8 Community Development Corporation.
Houses for Hope began in 2006 as a result of the struggles experienced by the Residential Services Department and their attempts to acquire affordable handicap accessible homes in the area. Until then, Dawn of Hope had been faced with adding ramps, widening doorways and modifying showers to adapt the rental homes to the needs of current service-recipients.
Through community partnerships Houses for Hope has constructed a total of thirteen handicap accessible homes in a three county area throughout the Tri-Cities region. We especially wish to express appreciation to Contractor Supervisor Ronnie Carr for the quality work of the homes!
